Canal House
Reinvented Dutch masterpiece. Dark, dramatic, and quietly seductive — rich purples, deep blacks, gilded plasterwork and moody reclaimed mirrors, with original 17th-century timber beams and ornate ceilings intact. Think Dutch Golden Age meeting 21st-century design.
Good Room 18 overlooks the garden — one of the best value picks in the hotel
Why It Matters
One of the few hotels in Amsterdam to genuinely fuse historic canal-house architecture with serious contemporary Dutch design. Member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World and part of the Curious Hotels Collection alongside L'Hotel in Paris and The Portobello in London. The garden is one of the largest private gardens in central Amsterdam — a triple-width rarity in a city where land is famously expensive.
Three 17th-century merchant houses merged into one 23-room boutique hotel on Amsterdam's grandest canal, the Keizersgracht. The interior plays Dutch Golden Age history against contemporary Dutch design — velvet, silk wallpaper and Bisazza mosaics alongside Marcel Wanders artwork — and it works. Owners Peter and Jessica Frankopan spent three years rebuilding the houses from the ground up, and the result is one of Amsterdam's most considered small hotels.
