Kyoto Karasuma Rokkaku
Urban Japanese business hotel with authentic machiya soul. Think minimalist rooms, warm wood tones, yukata robes, and a public bath culture that takes itself seriously. Not a ryokan, but closer to one than most city hotels.
Book a Private Spa room if budget allows — the in-room open-air bath is a step above the communal SkySpa experience
Why It Matters
The lounge building (former Ban family residence) is a Kyoto City-designated registered tangible cultural property, and the conversion won a gold award at the international MUSE Design Awards 2022. On top of that, this is one of very few public baths in Kyoto that explicitly welcomes guests with tattoos — a genuine rarity in Japan.
A century-old Kyoto machiya townhouse — the former Ban family residence, now a registered tangible cultural property — serves as the public face of this modern 4-star hotel. Behind it, a purpose-built guest room block handles the sleeping; the machiya handles everything else: lounge, library, bar, and breakfast. It's a smart split. Rooms are clean, modern, and compact, anchored by Simmons mattresses and a consistently praised complimentary SkySpa with open-air baths.

How you'll actually spend your days.
The lounge bar on the machiya's second floor faces an inner garden and courtyard. Quietly one of the more atmospheric spots in the building, especially with a glass of wine in the evening.
Settle into the 100-year-old machiya's second-floor library with a free coffee or tea. Open 24 hours. Good spot for travel planning, journaling, or just decompressing in a room that has actual historic bones.
A Kyoto-specific bento breakfast with seasonal small dishes — not the usual hotel buffet. Served in the tatami lounge of the machiya building. Worth booking in advance for the cultural experience alone.
The main evening ritual at this hotel. Hit the open-air bath after a full day of Kyoto temple-hopping, then cool down in the cold plunge (men) or mist sauna (women). Free, tattoo-friendly, open most of the night.
