Canfranc Estación
Grand railway heritage hotel with art deco interiors, Aragonese mountain setting, and serious haute cuisine ambitions. More history-obsessed than typical mountain resort.
Book a table in the 1928 restaurant inside a restored train carriage — it's the most atmospheric seat in the house and gets reserved fast
Why It Matters
The only 5-star Gran Lujo hotel in Aragón, occupying a building declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in 2002 and considered one of Europe's most important early 20th-century railway complexes. Its restaurant Canfranc Express holds a Michelin star. Named one of the best hotel openings in the world by the Financial Times. Two Michelin Keys awarded to the hotel itself.
This is a hotel that literally is a railway station — and one of the grandest ever built in Spain. The Canfranc International Station opened in 1928 with King Alfonso XIII in attendance, then sat derelict for decades before Barceló Group transformed it into a 104-room luxury property. The building is enormous, ornate, and slightly absurd in the best possible way: all slate roofs, art deco pinnacles, and a central dome, with the snowy Aragonese Pyrenees as the backdrop. Inside, it's velvet, brass, parquet floors, and a color palette straight out of the 1920s — Vogue called it 'an atmosphere worthy of a Wes Anderson film.'
