Carmel Valley Ranch
Ranch-luxury meets summer camp for grown-ups. Rustic-chic design with cathedral ceilings, travertine fireplaces, and natural materials. Lively and family-friendly, but private enough for romantic escapes. The energy is outdoorsy and unpretentious — guests wander from pool to vineyard to spa trail in hiking boots.
Non-resort guests can only book golf tee times after 1pm — arrive as a guest for morning rounds at $195/18 holes
Why It Matters
The only Pete Dye-designed bentgrass golf course in Northern California anchors a genuinely working ranch — with on-site goats providing milk for the creamery, bees producing honey used in spa treatments, and a pinot noir vineyard. Named #1 Resort in Northern California by Condé Nast Traveler Readers' Choice Awards (2016 and 2022). The all-suite policy means the entry-level room is still 650 sq ft with a fireplace and private deck.
Carmel Valley Ranch is a 500-acre all-suite resort sprawled across the sunny foothills of the Santa Lucia Mountains, about 6 miles inland from Carmel-by-the-Sea. Think summer camp for adults — with goats, an on-site vineyard, beehives, and a Pete Dye golf course — but with 800-square-foot suites and a spa that uses honey harvested from the property's own hives. It earns its place as Northern California's most activity-packed luxury resort, where the question isn't what to do, but what to skip.

Guided off-road vehicle excursions through the property's terrain.

The only Pete Dye-designed bentgrass golf course in Northern California. A par-70, 18-hole layout with dramatic elevation changes, tactical shot-making, and valley scenery. Ranked among the top resort courses in the country by Travel + Leisure's 'World's Best' readers' survey. Golf shop open 7am–5:30pm daily.
The resort's main play hub with an Adventure Den and Game Lawn for kids, three pools (including splash pad), 9 tennis courts, pickleball courts, an expansive fitness center, and the River Ranch Bar & Grill.
Nightly complimentary s'mores setup at fire pits throughout the property. Simple, social, and surprisingly beloved by guests of all ages.
The ranch maintains a working herd: goats, miniature donkeys, alpacas, cows, and chickens. Guests can join guided animal encounters, attend hilltop donkey picnics, tour the organic garden and hen house, and feed the goats. The goats' milk goes to the on-site creamery.
Walk through the on-site pinot noir vineyard. Complimentary wine tastings from the resort's own grapes are offered as part of the artisan experiences.
