Casa da Calçada
Palatial baroque exterior, deliberately minimalist 21st-century interior. Formal enough for special occasions, but relaxed enough that guests linger at the bar for hours. Private-house feel — only 35 rooms ensures it never gets anonymous.

Why It Matters
Michelin-starred fine dining (2026 guide), Relais & Châteaux membership, estate vinho verde, recent €15 million renovation, Portuguese government-listed building of architectural and historical significance. One of the few five-star hotels between Porto and the Douro Valley.
A 16th-century Baroque palace on the banks of the River Tâmega, about an hour inland from Porto. The lemon-yellow facade is iconic in Amarante's skyline, but the 35 rooms inside are deliberately contemporary — crisp, clean design that knows it doesn't need to compete with the palace itself. Back in April 2025 after a €15 million renovation, it's already earned a 2026 Michelin star for Largo do Paço, where 27-year-old chef Francisco Quintas runs 13–15 course tasting menus. The estate also produces its own vinho verde from a vineyard certified since 1917.
