Casa das Penhas Douradas
Retro Scandinavian-meets-Portuguese mountain design. Warm, cozy, and deeply rooted in the local wool-weaving tradition. Small (17–18 rooms), intimate, and unpretentious — guests often describe it as a very stylish family-run place.
Request a balcony room for the full sunrise experience over the mountain range — some standard mountain-view rooms face the garden and the views can be partial.
Why It Matters
Portugal's original mountain boutique hotel and the flagship of Burel Mountain Hotels, which also revived the Burel Factory wool mill in Manteigas. The hotel sits at 1,500m altitude in one of the earliest health resorts in Iberia — Penhas Douradas was contemporary with Davos as a 19th-century sanatorium destination. Tablet Hotels listed.
Perched at 1,500 meters on the edge of Portugal's Serra da Estrela Natural Park, Casa das Penhas Douradas is the hotel that started the Burel Mountain Hotels project back in 2006. The building looks like a retro alpine chalet crossed with a Scandinavian design studio — cork cladding on the exterior, birch wood lining the rooms inside, burel wool on the sofas and walls. Everything from the heated glass-enclosed pool to the outdoor Nordic Ofurô bath faces the mountain, which in winter goes fully white and practically asks you to stay an extra night.
