Casa Laguna Hotel & Spa
Historic Spanish-colonial inn meets Moroccan-inflected boutique glamour. Intimate, romantic, and decidedly grown-up — no guests under 18. The lush garden courtyard, water fountains, and terracotta rooflines give it a vaguely Mediterranean feel, and the whole place is quiet in a way that the main Laguna strip is not.

Why It Matters
The 2016 Martyn Lawrence Bullard redesign turned a charming but sleepy inn into one of Southern California's most design-forward small hotels. Recognized by Condé Nast Traveler ('worth it for the decor alone'), Travel + Leisure, Goop, and the Los Angeles Times. Voted 'Best of Orange County' by OC Register readers for a decade running. One of the few adults-only boutique properties in Laguna Beach.
Casa Laguna Hotel & Spa is a 23-room adults-only boutique inn sitting on a hillside directly above Pacific Coast Highway, with the Pacific Ocean on the other side of the road. Built in the early 1920s in Spanish colonial style, the property was completely redesigned in 2016 by celebrity designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard — think hand-painted Moorish tiles, bold Catalina ceramics, custom fabric prints, and ceiling decorations in rich blues, burgundy, and terra cotta. Part of the Common Thread Hotels collection, it operates somewhere between a proper hotel and a particularly stylish B&B: only 23 rooms, a heated pool that overlooks the ocean, a small spa, and a complimentary breakfast that guests consistently rave about.

The hotel provides a beach bag packed with towels, blankets, and walking directions to nearby beaches. A small touch that guests consistently mention as a standout detail.
A complimentary nightly wine and cheese reception held in the hotel lounge. Consistently praised by guests and gives the property more of an inn feel than a conventional hotel.
The lushly landscaped hillside property has winding tile paths, water fountains, potted plants around every corner, and a small bell tower with ocean views. Plenty of quiet seating nooks throughout.
A heated pool surrounded by cushion-lined stone loungers and palm trees, with views of the Pacific. One of the best pools for its size in Laguna Beach — it actually overlooks the ocean, which most comparable hotels can't claim.
