Why It Matters

Family-owned since 1916 and still run directly by owners Giuseppe and Charlotte Montani. The architect Liliana Sciacca designed the interiors; the lobby walls were hand-painted by Philippe Gandon. The building has real history and the property operates more like a curated private residence than a hotel — breakfast is delivered to your room on fine Ginori china, concierge is sometimes Giuseppe himself.

Casa Montani is a five-room luxury guesthouse on the third floor of a 1920s building directly facing Porta del Popolo and Piazza del Popolo. The Montani family has owned it since 1916 — Giuseppe's great-grandfather bought the place straight from the builder — and it's been run ever since as a very personal, owner-managed operation. Think less hotel, more staying with stylish Roman friends who happen to have impeccable taste.

Three individually decorated rooms (Rooms 2, 3, and 4) in light colors with hardwood floors and silk bedspreads. Room 2 has olive-green walls, narrow French doors onto a small balcony with outdoor furniture overlooking an internal courtyard. Room 3 has long street views. Room 4 is the most popular — a romantically carved headboard and street views make it feel the most special. All Deluxe Rooms share the same price regardless of floor number.
