Castel Badia
Historic castle meets contemporary alpine restraint. Monastic calm without the theatrical heritage hotel feel. Stone walls and vaulted ceilings coexist with velvet, rugs and Technogym equipment. The mood is deliberately unhurried.
Book the Chalet if traveling as a family or small group — 167 sqm in the former convent bakery with full independence
Why It Matters
One of very few 11th-century Benedictine convents in the Alps converted into a proper luxury hotel. The abbesses who once ran this place wielded unusual independence — one famously defied the bishopric in the 15th century. Their initials are still on the walls. The property has 17 gardens, including one dedicated to medicinal herbs, and the spa occupies the former monastic cells connected by a Romanesque-vaulted underground passageway. Member of Leading Hotels of the World.
A real 11th-century Benedictine fortress above San Lorenzo di Sebato, Castel Badia spent two centuries in ruin before reopening in late 2025 after a €30+ million restoration. Only 28 rooms and one standalone chalet, each genuinely different in layout. The building's layered history — crypts, exposed frescoes, Romanesque vaults, medieval loopholes — is kept visible rather than glossed over, while Milan-based Studio Droulers handled interiors with quiet restraint: South Tyrolean wood, stone, warm textiles. Five minutes from Plan de Corones (Kronplatz). But it works just as well in summer.

On Property
How you'll actually spend your days.
Bicycles provided to guests for exploring the valley and surrounding area.
Direct access to trail networks across the Puster Valley and into the broader Dolomite landscape. The hotel provides bicycles and a regional public transport pass.
Fragments of the original Benedictine chapel and crypt remain open for guests to explore. Romanesque architectural details and medieval frescoes brought to light during the restoration are also accessible.
Complimentary green fees at Pustertal Golf Club are included from April to October. An adjacent golf course is noted in listings.
Arrange a full guided ski day on Kronplatz including lunch at AlpINN — the mountain restaurant with serious Dolomite views.
The hotel is five minutes from Plan de Corones, one of the Alps' best-organized ski areas and part of the Dolomiti Superski network. The hotel offers a shuttle, dedicated ski room, and a private ski lounge near the lift.
The reconstructed medicinal herb garden — one of 17 gardens surrounding the property — follows historical sources from the convent's monastic past. The same herbs appear in spa treatments and menus.
Guided snowshoe excursions on the Fanes plateau — quieter and more contemplative than skiing, suited to guests who want to experience the winter landscape at a slower pace.
Supervised kids' area for children aged 4 and over, available on site.
Messner Mountain Museum Ripa in Brunico Castle explores mountain cultures from around the world. LUMEN on Kronplatz brings photography, landscape and mountain perspective together. Both are close and worth combining with a ski day.
