Castello di Buttrio
Aristocratic country house with genuine wine-estate soul. Chandeliers, carved friezes, plank floors, and exquisite fabrics in the rooms — but never stiff or formal. Guests wander the park, taste the estate's Friulano, and the staff knows your name.
Ask about the wooden staircase in the villa — it's from an early 20th-century Trieste cruise ship, installed by the Morpurgo barons
Why It Matters
One of very few small castle hotels in Italy's Colli Orientali del Friuli wine region, where guests sleep inside the working estate that produces the wines they drink at dinner. Only eight rooms means real privacy and personal service.
A working wine estate turned eight-room castle hotel, sitting 140 meters above the Friulian plain on a hill called Pampinutta. The property spans an 18th-century neoclassical villa, a 17th-century palazzo, ancient farmhouses, and a 14th-century church — all surrounded by 26 hectares of vineyards. Winemaker Alessandra Felluga runs both the estate and the hotel, and that family-owned character comes through in every detail, from the fireplace aperitifs to the handmade wooden staircases salvaged from a Trieste cruise ship.
