di Spaltenna Exclusive Resort & Spa
Medieval castle romance with genuine substance. Stone walls, wrought iron beds, and a 1,000-year-old church next door, but with a full-service spa, Technogym equipment, and a Michelin star. Countryside quiet, not contrived rustic.
Request a winery visit through the concierge well in advance — reportedly complimentary for guests when arranged ahead of time.
Why It Matters
One of the few genuine medieval fortified monasteries operating as a hotel in Chianti Classico, with a Michelin star (held since 2017) and Small Luxury Hotels of the World membership. Own-production wines from estate Sangiovese vineyards.
A 10th-century fortified monastery that became a castle, and is now a 37-room, 5-star resort sitting high in the Chianti hills above Gaiole. The medieval stone bones are very much intact — vaulted ceilings, original fireplaces, terracotta floors — but everything that needs to be modern is. The Michelin-starred restaurant Il Pievano is worth the drive alone, and the new infinity pool with vineyard views makes a strong argument for not leaving.
