Intimate family-run castle retreat. Think house-guest, not hotel guest. Interiors are antique-forward without being stuffy — copper bathtubs, Indonesian textiles, old fireplaces, Venetian plasterwork. The scale is deliberately small: 11 accommodations total, maximum ~20 guests. It gets genuinely quiet here.

Why It Matters

A genuine 12th-century hilltop castle set on 40 hectares of organic vineyards and olive groves in Tuscany's Maremma. The Baccheschi Berti family — former Milanese fashion people — bought the ruins and spent 18 years restoring it by hand. Today their sons run it. Ten suites and a private villa, all individually designed with Indonesian antiques, vintage finds, and the original stone walls still doing most of the heavy lifting.

The most compact option at 48 sqm, but don't let the size put you off. Suite Mezzatorre
The second floor of the castle's main tower — the newest suite (10th) at Vicarello. At 110 sqm, it has Venetian putty walls, French oak parquet flooring, and a cozy fireplace. The standout is the bathroom: yellow Siena marble shower and a handcrafted copper bathtub. Connects to Suite Torre above for guests who want to take over the entire tower.

A light-filled 100 sqm suite adjacent to the infinity pool. Marble floors, bespoke furnishings, and a stone fireplace anchoring the living area. A standalone suite built from wood and glass set within the castle gardens. At 80 sqm it's mid-sized, but it comes with its own private hammam, sauna, and an outdoor jacuzzi fashioned from a repurposed wine-aging oak barrel. The private terrace looks out over the Maremma hills — it's perfect for sunset yoga. Two wood-lined rain showers inside.

A two-story 150 sqm standalone villa next to the infinity pool. Brand new for 2025, this is a restored 12th-century watchtower spanning 210 sqm across four floors. Two en-suite bedrooms — the master has French oak parquet and a copper bathtub; the second has terracotta floors. The glasshouse structure wraps the dining room and kitchen, opening onto a sun deck. Outside: 450 sqm of private outdoor space including a 4x7m heated pool with hydromassage jets, reserved exclusively for villa guests. Views of the vineyards on one side and the main castello on the other.
