Château de Bagnols
Medieval grandeur meets French art de vivre. Original moat, fortified towers, golden stone walls, and interior murals dating from the 12th to 18th centuries. The castle suites feel genuinely ancient — four-poster beds, working fireplaces, and walls covered in frescoes. Contemporary suites in the old wine cellar offer a cleaner, lighter contrast.
As of October 2025, the château is privatizable only — you must hire the entire property for your event. Contact events@chateaudebagnols.fr.
Why It Matters
One of France's most authentically preserved medieval châteaux. Classified as a Historic Monument. The courtyard murals and wall paintings survive from the Renaissance era. King Charles VIII visited in 1490 — a stone crown above the guard room fireplace marks the occasion. The Marquise de Sévigné, one of France's great letter-writers, was a guest of the Dugué family who owned it in the 17th century. The 27 suites are named after actual historical figures from the château's 800-year ownership lineage.
A 13th-century château classified as a French Historic Monument, built in 1217 by Guichard d'Oingt in the heart of the Beaujolais wine country. Purchased as a near-ruin in 1987 by English publishing magnate Paul Hamlyn and his wife Helen, who spent four years restoring it before opening it as a luxury hotel in 1992. The Lavorel Hotels Group took over in 2012, adding a glass-roofed inner courtyard, spa, and six contemporary suites in the former wine cellar. As of October 2025, the property no longer operates as a traditional hotel — it is now exclusively available for private hire for weddings, seminars, corporate events, and film productions.
