Château de Collias
Grand historic estate, old-money French countryside. Stone vaults, period fireplaces, painted Italian ceilings from the 19th century, and contemporary art from the owners' private collection. Intimate and unfussy rather than stiff or formal — the owners run it like a cultivated private home.
The 'Chambre de la Tour' is in the actual 11th-century medieval tower, with a rooftop terrace — request it specifically when enquiring.
Why It Matters
The château earned a Michelin star for its restaurant L'Hirondelle just months after opening in 2023 — a remarkable feat. The property has since transitioned to exclusive private hire only, with 14 rooms across the estate that can be rented in full (28 guests) or in part (8 rooms). The medieval tower room with its panoramic rooftop terrace over the Gardon gorges is one of the most singular bedrooms in southern France.
A thousand-year-old château in the Occitan village of Collias, perched above the Gorges du Gardon. Medieval foundations, Renaissance additions, an 18th-century façade, and a 19th-century Italianate renovation — it sounds like a lot, but it wears it well. Owned since 2019 by hospitality professionals Christophe Tailleur and Philippe Huber, who spent years restoring the place before opening it in May 2023. The model has since shifted: the château now operates as an exclusively private rental for families, wedding parties, and corporate groups rather than as a traditional open hotel.

How you'll actually spend your days.
The owners' contemporary art collection is displayed throughout the château, and the property has an art gallery space. Concerts, theatrical performances, readings, and exhibitions have been hosted on the estate.
Free bicycle rental is available for guests. The surrounding area of Collias and the Gardon valley is popular cycling territory.
A billiards table is available at the property — classic château leisure.
The château hosts concerts, theatrical performances, readings, and exhibitions — both outdoors in the park and in the château's spacious interior rooms. Guests have proximity to the Festival d'Avignon, the Chorégies d'Orange, and the Nuits Musicales d'Uzès.
The gorges directly below the château's park offer serious hiking — limestone cliffs, garrigue scrubland, river access. The park itself connects to the wider trail network. Part of the UNESCO Natura 2000 protected area.
Horse riding is available in the surrounding area, including at the Centre Équestre du Pont du Gard nearby.
The village of Collias is the main put-in point for kayaking and canoeing through the Gorges du Gardon — one of the finest half-day experiences in the region. Multiple rental outfitters operate directly from the village, 5–10 minutes on foot from the château gates.
The property's park extends over several acres down toward the Gardon river gorges. Paths wind through garrigue, past a romantic waterfall, under a large magnolia. The park is part of the UNESCO-listed Gorges du Gardon Natura 2000 zone — meaning the biodiversity is serious, not just decorative.
An 18-metre heated outdoor pool with a basin-shaped design in keeping with the 19th-century character of the estate. Surrounded by a spacious sunbathing deck, overlooking the garden and park, with views toward pine-covered hills. The pool is part of the Gorges du Gardon Natura 2000 setting.
