Château de Mercuès
Medieval grandeur meets serious wine estate. Gold interiors, antique furniture, marble bathrooms — unmistakably aristocratic. But this isn't a dusty museum: the Vigouroux family has run it as a working wine château since 1983, and the Malbec obsession here is genuine and deep.
Book La Table du Chef well in advance (48h minimum, but it fills up) — 9 courses, max 5 guests, inside the working kitchen
Why It Matters
Recipient of the Michelin Clef 2024 and a full Relais & Châteaux member. One of the only places in France where you can sleep in a classified historic monument (listed since 1947), tour a Romano-Byzantine wine cellar, and dine in the former bishops' great hall — all in the same evening. The vineyard's planting density rivals the great Médocs of Bordeaux.
A medieval château perched on a vertiginous cliff above the Lot River, in the Vigouroux family since 1983. Originally the summer residence of the Count-Bishops of Cahors for nearly eight centuries, it's now a 4-star Relais & Châteaux wine-estate hotel with 30 rooms and suites, a gastronomic restaurant, and its own 35-hectare Malbec vineyard planted at an eye-watering density of 6,666 vines per hectare. The former bishops' dining hall is now the restaurant. The underground cellar is Romano-Byzantine in style. And the turrets are actual medieval turrets — not decorative ones.
