Château du Grand-Lucé
Opulent French aristocracy meets au courant design — gold gilt and crystal chandeliers alongside irreverent JPG fabrics. Grand but never stiff. Tiny guest count (max ~44 guests) means it feels like a private house party for people with excellent taste.
Ask for a garden-view room on the first floor — the parterre views are worth every euro over a village-view room.
Why It Matters
A classified French national landmark with 2 Michelin Keys (2025), on the Leading Hotels of the World roster, named to best-hotel lists by Condé Nast Traveler, Tatler, and Travel + Leisure. Voltaire, Rousseau, Mozart, and Diderot visited the original salon here. During WWII, the Louvre hid paintings from the Nazis in what is now the ballroom. Literally nowhere else is quite like it.
Built in 1760 for Baron Jacques Pineau de Viennay — a favorite of Louis XV — this 45,000-square-foot neoclassical limestone château is one of France's officially protected Monuments Historiques. American designer Timothy Corrigan bought it, restored it obsessively (the French preservation authorities were watching), and it opened as a 19-room boutique hotel in 2019. The result is 80 acres of walled Loire Valley grounds, rooms draped in Pierre Frey and Jean-Paul Gaultier archival fabrics, original point de Hongrie oak floors still intact, and the kind of service that makes you feel like the Baron just popped out for a moment.

A reportedly spectacular billiards room on the property — guests describe it as mind-blowing.
Bocce ball court on the estate grounds.
Set in the Jardin Exotique (Exotic Garden), the pool occupies what was originally a magnificent ornamental fountain in the Baron's era. Surrounded by high walls that trap Loire Valley sunshine and provide privacy. Poolside robes provided.

80 acres of walled private grounds including formal French gardens inspired by Versailles, an organic potager garden and orchards, an orangerie, a tranquil lake, meadows, and a historic white oak forest. Seven statues gifted by Louis XV are placed throughout. The forest has a circular clearing designed in 1760, with a statue of Proserpine at its center.
Helicopter transfers from Paris (approximately 25 minutes) can be arranged. The estate's meadow provides landing space.
Balloon pickups organized from the meadow beyond the château's lake. Requires advance booking through the hotel.
Picnic baskets prepared by the kitchen, set up in the grounds by the lake or rose gardens. A favorite for couples.
The hotel arranges bespoke day excursions to nearby Loire châteaux — Chenonceau, Clos Lucé (Leonardo da Vinci's home), and others — complete with picnic baskets packed with local fromage and pastries.
Sancerre and Loire Valley wine tastings. Jack Pine's bar stocks local wines. The hotel team curates selections from nearby vineyards and can arrange winery visits.
Yoga sessions held in the château's orangerie during warm months — the same space that houses citrus trees over winter.
