Château la Thuilière
Opulent-meets-personal. Think antique monastery tables at breakfast, Mies van der Rohe Barcelona chairs in the bedrooms, original 19th-century fireplaces, stained-glass windows, and a dramatic wooden staircase. Classic and contemporary collide in every room. The owners are the heart of it — guests repeatedly describe the feeling of visiting extremely thoughtful friends rather than checking into a hotel.

Why It Matters
A Tudor manor in the French countryside — that alone is worth explaining. The architecture was inspired by the legend of Saint Front, the local patron saint, and the result is something you simply won't find anywhere else in the Périgord. It's listed on Tablet Hotels and recognized by Michelin, and the in-house dining is restaurant-quality.
Built in 1889 as a literal wedding present — a prosperous local businessman constructed this Tudor-style manor for his fiancée on land once belonging to the Marquis de Foucault. The result is a genuinely eccentric country house set in 7 hectares of parkland and woodland in the Dordogne countryside. Owners Stéphane and Laïla run it as a serious maison d'hôtes: small, personal, and focused on the table d'hôtes experience around the château's original dining room.
