Château Neercanne
Historic castle estate with a genuine fine dining identity. Grand without being stuffy. Think thick stone walls, Baroque gardens, candlelit marl caves, and menus built on homegrown produce. The vibe is elegant and hushed — no pool, no spa, no gym. The draw is the food, the history, and the setting.
Book the Michelin-starred restaurant well in advance — it's open Wed–Sun only and fills up fast even for non-guests.
Why It Matters
The only terraced castle in the Netherlands, built in 1698 and still holding a Michelin star it first earned in 1986. It waited nearly four decades before adding hotel rooms in 2024. The property also holds Michelin 2 Clefs (for accommodations), hosts a Bib Gourmand restaurant in its former stables, and sits directly on the Dutch-Belgian border — you can literally walk from one country to the other across the estate. The ancient marl cave network, over 500 sqm, includes a speakeasy bar called Bar 1698 and has hosted events connected to the signing of the Maastricht Treaty.
The only terraced castle in the Netherlands, Château Neercanne is a 17th-century château perched above the Jeker Valley on the Dutch-Belgian border. For decades it was a serious fine dining pilgrimage — Michelin-starred since 1986. It only started welcoming overnight guests in 2024, when seven suites were carved out of the original logement. Still primarily a gastronomy destination, now with a place to sleep.
