Claris Hotel & Spa GL
Art-forward luxury meets museum-hotel. Intellectual and cultured rather than flashy. The building itself is an architectural statement — postmodern collision of old palace and modern glass tower. Guests who care about design, history, and art collections will feel right at home.
Always book on the official website: you get a welcome drink, chocolate truffles in the room, complimentary minibar with soft drinks, and free Egyptian Museum entry — none of which come through OTAs
Why It Matters
One of the only hotels in the world where every single room contains authentic archaeological artifacts. The on-site Mayan Secret Spa has won the World Luxury Spa Awards as Best Spa in a Historic Luxury Hotel in the World every year from 2018 to 2025. The building — the Vedruna Palace — is listed in the Inventory of Architectural Heritage of Catalonia.
This is a 19th-century neoclassical palace with a modern glass-and-steel tower inserted right on top of it. The contrast is jarring in the best possible way. Built in 1883 as one of Barcelona's first grand residences, the Vedruna Palace was converted into a hotel in 1992 by architects Bohigas, Martorell and Mackay — and they kept the old shell while planting a narrower, taller modern structure above it. Inside, over 400 pieces of art and archaeological artifacts line every room and corridor: Roman mosaics, pre-Columbian jade, 18th-century English furniture, Napoleon-era Egyptian engravings, Burmese sculptures. Every room is essentially a mini gallery. Add an award-winning Mayan-themed spa, two serious restaurants (Mediterranean rooftop and a new Japanese), and a free pass to the Egyptian Museum next door, and you've got a hotel that genuinely earns its 5-star GL rating.

The largest private collection of Egyptian art in Europe, located next door to the hotel. Hotel Claris guests receive free admission, courtesy of Derby Hotels Collection owner Jordi Clos — who is himself an Egyptologist and funded excavations in Egypt for over 20 years.
Over 400 unique works of art are on display throughout the hotel. The dedicated Museum Room houses pre-Columbian artifacts from the Maya civilization, figures from Mesoamerica and the Andean region, and Costa Rican warrior statues. Other pieces scattered through the hotel include 18th-19th century English furniture, Turkish kilims, Roman mosaics, Egyptian engravings commissioned by Napoleon, and works by Catalan artist Josep Guinovart.
On-site gym equipped with modern equipment. Also includes a sauna.
Live music and DJ sets at the rooftop bar on Thursday and Saturday nights, according to editorial reports.
