Cocolia Hotel
Off-grid jungle sanctuary. Clean-lined, minimal architecture that lets the setting do the talking — open-air showers, sliding doors straight into the forest, sea views from your terrace. Barefoot luxury without the pretension.
Book the ATV transfer in advance — walking up from town with luggage in humidity is genuinely grueling
Why It Matters
Michelin Guide-listed and designed by Septiembre Arquitectura, Cocolia was among the first proper boutique hotels to reach Mazunte. The entire operation runs off-grid: solar power, rainwater collection, no AC, no hot water, no hairdryers. What you trade in convenience you gain in genuine seclusion and one of the most striking natural settings on Mexico's Pacific coast.
Cocolia is an adults-only eco-boutique hotel perched on a jungle hillside above Playa Mermejita. Originally opened in December 2018 as a 9-cabin yoga retreat, the property expanded significantly (completed 2024) to 28 private bungalows designed by Septiembre Arquitectura — all built from local wood and stone, running entirely on solar panels and harvested rainwater. Getting here is half the commitment: it's a steep 20-25 minute climb from town, most sensibly done by ATV.

How you'll actually spend your days.
Hands-on cooking sessions drawing on Oaxacan recipes and locally sourced ingredients. A direct line into the region's culinary heritage.
Guided tastings of regional Oaxacan mezcals at the on-site Mezcalería. Each session works through different producers and agave varieties served in traditional jicaritas.
Hands-on cocktail-making workshops using local spirits and ingredients. Run at the hotel's bar area.
Mermejita is a known surf spot, and the hotel can organize board rentals and point guests toward the right breaks for their level. A 5-minute walk downhill from the property.
Hotel staff can organize local experiences including visits to the Sea Turtle Liberation Center in Mazunte, whale and dolphin watching from Mermejita, kayaking in the Ventanilla Lagoon, and sunset hikes to Punta Cometa.
Daily sessions in the open-air wellness shala overlooking the ocean and jungle. Also available for private bookings for groups.
Amenities & Practical Info
The details that matter for planning.
WiFi is available but only reliably in certain areas of the hotel, primarily near the entrance. Signal is absent in most bungalows — intentionally so.
No guests under 16 permitted. Keeps the atmosphere consistently quiet.
Pets are allowed with a surcharge of approximately $30 USD per stay.
One pool is hidden in the jungle — smaller and more intimate. The other is the main pool near the Mezcalería, designed to feel like it flows into the horizon. Both are saltwater, natural filtration.
Sells exclusively handmade crafts from Mazunte artisans. Every purchase goes directly to the local community.
The entire property runs on solar energy. This means no AC, no hairdryers, no irons, no coffee makers permitted in rooms. Phones and laptops can be charged.
Rainwater is harvested and recycled for use during the dry season. Greywater feeds the hotel's fruit trees and herb garden.
Plastic bottle-free; guests use refillable stations throughout the property.
