Book the ATV transfer in advance — walking up from town with luggage in humidity is genuinely grueling

Why It Matters

Michelin Guide-listed and designed by Septiembre Arquitectura, Cocolia was among the first proper boutique hotels to reach Mazunte. The entire operation runs off-grid: solar power, rainwater collection, no AC, no hot water, no hairdryers. What you trade in convenience you gain in genuine seclusion and one of the most striking natural settings on Mexico's Pacific coast.

Cocolia is an adults-only eco-boutique hotel perched on a jungle hillside above Playa Mermejita. Originally opened in December 2018 as a 9-cabin yoga retreat, the property expanded significantly (completed 2024) to 28 private bungalows designed by Septiembre Arquitectura — all built from local wood and stone, running entirely on solar panels and harvested rainwater. Getting here is half the commitment: it's a steep 20-25 minute climb from town, most sensibly done by ATV.
