Palacio de Atocha
Historic palace grandeur meets cool Madrid contemporary. Ornate molded ceilings and preserved 19th-century stucco on one side; Bang & Olufsen speakers, bespoke art-deco lighting, and a courtyard plunge pool on the other. Feels intimate and personal rather than grand-hotel imposing.
Book a courtyard-facing room if you're a light sleeper — Calle de Atocha gets loud at night despite the soundproofing
Why It Matters
Michelin Key award recipient. Ranked #7 of 504 hotels in Madrid on TripAdvisor. One of very few hotels in central Madrid operating out of a genuinely preserved 19th-century palace, with heritage wallpapers considered of cultural interest by Spain's Heritage Department. The room sizes — starting at 34 sqm and topping out at 110 sqm — are exceptional for the price point in this city.
A genuine 1852 palace — built for a knight of the Order of Charles III — turned into one of Madrid's most talked-about boutique hotels. The entrance alone sets the tone: a 7-meter-high former horse-carriage passage, watched over by a sculpture of the god Hermes, leads straight through to a secret courtyard pool garden. Inside, 34 rooms range from 34 to 110 sqm, making them some of the largest hotel rooms in the city. The rooms on the noble lower floors lean industrial-loft, with microcement bathrooms and exposed ironwork; upper floors are more classic and sophisticated. Either way, the ceilings are high, the beds are proper king-size, and the Molton Brown toiletries are full-size.
