Coqui Papholchac Coba Residence & Spa
1920s jungle explorer meets Mayan ruin aesthetic. Earth tones, stone floors, botanical prints, antique globes and maps. The entire brand is rooted in artisanal perfumery — scent is woven into every corner of the property.
Staying here gives you access to the Coba ruins right at 8am opening — arrive the moment they unlock and you'll have the pyramids almost entirely to yourself before the day-trip buses arrive.
Why It Matters
Founded by former model Nicolas Malleville, this is the most dramatically sited small hotel in the Yucatan — built to emulate Mayan pyramid architecture and sitting directly on a wildlife lagoon teeming with birds, frogs, and crocodiles. With only five accommodations, it books out fast and feels genuinely remote.
Two limestone towers rising from the edge of a Coba lagoon, connected by a hanging wooden bridge, styled to look like they've been there since the Mayan era. This place has five guest accommodations total, no TVs, barely any plug sockets, and saltwater in the plumbing — all very much by design. What it does have: handmade hammocks, stone bathtubs, safari-era antiques, and a perfumery-meets-spa that uses locally grown ingredients. The Coba ruins are a 10-minute walk away, and actual crocodiles live in the lagoon out front.

On Property
How you'll actually spend your days.
Bicycles can be rented to navigate the 6km Coba ruin site. Hotel can assist with rentals from local providers.
Several freshwater cenotes are within 3–6km of the property, including Multum Ha and the Tamcach-Ha & Choo-Ha cenotes. Snorkel gear and swimwear are recommended. Best done independently or with local guides.
The Coba archaeological zone is a 10–15 minute walk from the hotel entrance. Arrive at the 8am opening and you'll have the ruins largely to yourself before the day-trip crowd arrives. The ruined Maya city sprawls around two lagoons, with sacbe (elevated pathways) branching off from the central site and pyramids reaching up to 42 meters high. The hotel can assist with bicycle rentals to cover the 6km site.
The lagoon directly in front of the property is home to birds, frogs, and crocodiles — best admired from the terrace at dusk. Walking paths around the lagoon are quiet and rewarding in the early morning.
A curated collection of anthropological books, archaeological photographs, and antique maps — very much in keeping with the property's 1920s explorer aesthetic.
An outdoor firepit at the lagoon's edge makes for a quintessential evening activity — watching the still water catch the firelight while birds and geckos provide the soundtrack.
The on-site perfumery is a full Coqui Coqui boutique showcasing the brand's exclusive fragrance collection, Oficios Artesanos handmade leathergoods, clothing, and travel essentials. Guests also select a personalized fragrance on arrival. The Menli scent — lime and mint specific to Coba — is a signature take-home.
