Cotton House
Historic Neoclassical grandeur meets contemporary boutique luxury — monochromatic palette of white, black, and sepia; cotton-themed design details throughout; sophisticated but not stuffy
Ask for a Cotton Room with courtyard view and balcony — 28 sqm feels roomy, and the quiet inner courtyard is a world away from Gran Via
Why It Matters
The building has been a Barcelona architectural landmark since 1876. Few luxury hotels in the city have this level of preserved 19th-century interior detail — original frescoed ceilings, the grand marble staircase, and display cases still holding original cotton fabric samples. The spiral staircase, built in 1957 and famous among architecture enthusiasts, appears to hang mid-air. The Batuar restaurant draws non-guests for lunch and cocktails, which says a lot.
This is the former headquarters of Barcelona's Cotton Producers' Guild — a 19th-century Neoclassical landmark on Gran Via that became a 5-star boutique hotel in 2015. Interior designer Lázaro Rosa-Violán preserved the bones: soaring marble staircase, ornate ceiling frescoes, parquet floors, and a cantilevered 1950s spiral staircase that appears to float without floor support. The result is 83 rooms and five suites, a restaurant the locals actually go to, a small rooftop pool with Sagrada Família views, and a bespoke tailoring workshop that directly references the building's textile past.

A recurring artisan market held in the hotel's spaces, now in its seventh year with over 30 editions. Features independent brands that work closely with raw materials. Dates vary — check the hotel's What's On page.
More than a standard concierge. Named after the Latin word for cotton flower, the Gossypium team records every guest's preferences and designs completely personalized city programs — cultural, artistic, and culinary. Think tailor-made Barcelona itineraries, not printed walking maps.
Cotton House participates annually in Hotel Tapa Tour Barcelona — a gastronomy festival where the city's most notable hotel restaurants serve mini tapa versions of their signature dishes at accessible prices. Usually held in May.
The hotel's most distinctive activity — a direct callback to the building's history as the Cotton Textile Foundation of Catalonia. In collaboration with Santa Eulalia, one of Barcelona's oldest tailoring workshops (founded 1843), a professional tailor visits L'Atelier on the ground floor to take measurements, advise on fabrics, and design custom garments. The finished piece is shipped to your home address after checkout. Mainly bespoke shirts.
The Library is the former boardroom of the Cotton Producers' Guild — now a reading room with shelves of original textile books and walls decorated with a ceiling fresco by E. Llorens. Afternoon tea is served here. The space can also be booked for private gatherings of up to 12 people.
A saltwater outdoor pool on the 6th floor with panoramic views over the Eixample grid and toward Sagrada Família. Food and beverage service runs from noon to 8pm. Guests only — not open to the public. Small in size; gets crowded in high summer.
