Why It Matters
One of the few hotels in the Netherlands housed inside a working former courthouse. Certified Gold Green Key. The canal wharf cellar rooms are genuinely rare — the Nieuwegracht wharves were nominated for UNESCO World Heritage status in 2008. And the restaurant De Rechtbank is a legit local favorite, not just a hotel dining room.
A 4-star boutique hotel inside a fully renovated 19th-century courthouse whose foundations date to 1054. The building still has the monumental facade and ornamental fasces of its judicial past, but step inside and the rooms are sharp, colorful, and contemporary — decorated with historical photo prints of Utrecht and its court. Two minutes' walk away, four canal rooms sit inside wharf cellars on the Nieuwegracht, with private terraces right on the water.

Court Deluxe Room
Twelve of these, situated at the back of the building where it's noticeably quieter. Same contemporary design and box-spring beds as the standard rooms but with more floor space. The only room type where a free baby cot can be arranged (children up to 2 years). An extra bed for adults is not possible in any room category.
Court Room
The entry-level room and there are 15 of them. Modern design, plenty of daylight, box-spring beds with crisp linens. Decorated with photo prints from Utrecht's court history. Compact but well-equipped — everything you need, nothing superfluous. For €10 more you can upgrade to a Deluxe at the back of the building if street noise is a concern.
Judge's Canal Room
One of three wharf-cellar rooms set directly on the Nieuwegracht canal — a genuinely singular experience. The wharves date to 1150 and were nominated for UNESCO World Heritage status in 2008. This room has a full bathtub, a private outdoor terrace with garden furniture right on the water, and a minibar. Reach it via a steep staircase from street level, so not suitable for guests with mobility issues. Check-in happens at the main hotel, then staff walk you over (under 2 minutes).
Judy's Canal Room
The biggest room on the wharf and the only studio format — suitable for 2 adults and 2 children. Has a full kitchen, a sofa bed (for the children), a separate sitting area, a work desk, and its own private terrace on the water. The 180x210cm double bed is the largest in the canal lineup. Like all canal rooms, it requires descending a steep staircase.
KingJury's Canal Room
Recently renovated canal room in the Nieuwegracht wharf cellars. Like the Judge's room, it has a full bathtub and a private outdoor terrace with garden furniture on the water. The terrace works all year round, not just summer. Steep staircase access — not suitable for disabled guests.
Justice Canal Room
The largest of the three original canal rooms, with a little more space than the Judge's and Jury's rooms plus an indoor sitting area and a work desk. Has a shower rather than a bathtub. Private terrace on the water in summer. Accessible only via steep staircase — not suitable for guests with limited mobility.

Bikes available to rent directly at the front desk. Utrecht is one of the most cycle-friendly cities in the world — renting here is the obvious way to explore the canals, parks, and neighbourhoods beyond the centre. Book in advance to guarantee availability.
Various meeting rooms accommodating 4–35 people, each with a distinct character. The basement Justitiazaal (Lady Justice Hall) handles parties and private events up to 250 guests in banquet layout. Full catering by De Rechtbank available.
