Why It Matters

One of Scotland's most significant hotel reopenings of 2025. The Michel Roux-overseen dining, an estate rooted in 15th-century history with links to Robert the Bruce and inventor Charles Macintosh, and a growing set of accommodation options from castle suites to riverside cabins make this a rare multi-format luxury estate near Glasgow. The Four Angels Spa (named after the waterfall on the grounds) adds a full wellness offering.

Crossbasket Castle is a 15th-century Scottish tower house that was on Scotland's 'Buildings at Risk' register before owners Alison and Steve Timoney rescued it in 2011, spent £10m restoring it, and reopened it in 2016. Then came act two: a £20m expansion completed in March 2025 added a standalone 40-bedroom Art Deco hotel on the grounds, two new restaurants, and set the stage for a destination spa and 12 riverside cabins. The result is a genuinely layered estate — nine castle rooms full of period drama, sleek Deco hotel rooms next door, and private lodges with their own hot tubs — all 20 minutes from Glasgow city centre.
