Crown and Castle
Relaxed English hostelry. Stripped floorboards, open fires, original art on the walls, candles at night. Not stiff or formal — it is the kind of place where wellington boots wait by the back door.
Book the dog table in the restaurant by phone — it goes fast and cannot be reserved online
Why It Matters
Winner of the East of England Tourism Awards Small Hotel of the Year 2022-2023. Featured in the Michelin Hotel Guide and Sawday's. Previously owned by Ruth Watson, the original TV Hotel Inspector. Part of The Hotel Folk group of six Suffolk properties.
The Crown and Castle sits right next to the ruins of Henry II's 12th-century Orford Castle in a small Suffolk fishing village that essentially dead-ends at the river. The building itself is a Tudor-style house, and the whole operation runs as a proper restaurant-with-rooms: food is the main event here, with a two AA Rosette kitchen and a Michelin Guide listing. Twenty-one individually decorated bedrooms spread across the main house, garden annexes, a courtyard block, and a stable conversion give you enough variety to pick your vibe.
