Cuyama Buckhorn
Mid-century meets Western desert. Warm desert tones, vintage accents, custom-built furniture, and a genuine connection to the local ranching and oil-boom history. It's nostalgic without being kitschy — and the food program is legitimately good.

Why It Matters
One of the best examples of a classic California motor inn done right. Originally built in 1952 when New Cuyama was a booming oil town, the property was a local haunt for Johnny Cash in the 1960s and was featured on Magnolia Network's (Re)Motel. New ownership since 2018 transformed the drive-up parking lot into a private courtyard oasis with a 60'x20' pool, barrel sauna, and bocce courts. It's the only full-service restaurant and bar for miles — and it punches way above its weight.
A 1952 roadside motel, thoughtfully restored into a 21-room boutique desert resort. The Buckhorn sits in California's Hidden Valley of Enchantment in the high desert of Santa Barbara County — a quiet agricultural valley most people drive past without stopping. Rooms are small but well-designed, with Brooklinen linens, mini bars stocked with local snacks and spirits, and semi-private patios pointed at the mountains. The farm-to-table restaurant and bar, barrel sauna, heated pool, and jacuzzi give it enough on-site substance to justify staying put for two or three days.
