Why It Matters

This is Matali Crasset's debut architectural project and one of the very first contemporary design eco-lodges in southern Tunisia. The owners — who created the HI Hotel in Nice — invested €2.5 million in a full-board, sustainability-led retreat that uses geothermal energy, practices local agriculture, and commissions all furniture from Nefta craftspeople. Tablet Hotels listed it. IGNANT, Dezeen, Designboom, and the Wall Street Journal all covered it. There is simply nothing else like it in the region.

Dar HI is a one-of-a-kind eco-lodge sitting on the edge of Nefta's sunken palm oasis, overlooking the vast white salt flat of Chott El Jerid. French designer Matali Crasset — her first architectural project — conceived it as a small citadel rising from the sand: ochre walls, elevated houses on concrete pilotis, and interiors loaded with bold color, palm wood furniture, and faience tiles. The hotel was built entirely by local craftsmen using locally sourced materials, runs its pool and hammam on geothermal spring water, grows vegetables on site, and serves only regional food cooked by women from Nefta.

Where You'll Stay

4 room types available

Dar Malika
Traditional House

Dar Malika

A standalone traditional Tunisian house that rounds out the accommodation options at Dar HI. Less detailed information is available publicly, but it completes the four-concept portfolio alongside the Piloti, Troglodyte, and Dune typologies. Likely suited to guests seeking a more conventional Tunisian architectural setting within the Dar HI compound.

Dune Rooms
Suite / Group Room

Dune Rooms

Ground-level rooms that open directly onto the sand and feel like they have been sculpted by the desert itself. These are the most flexible units — Matali Crasset designed them so guests can rearrange the furniture to their own specifications. Larger open spaces suited to groups, couples who want maximum indoor-outdoor connection, and anyone who wants to feel the full weight of the Sahara without leaving their room. One notable Dune unit features a large indoor garden.

Piloti Rooms (Pill Houses)
Standard / Superior

Piloti Rooms (Pill Houses)

The architectural showpiece of Dar HI. These rooms are built on concrete pilotis (stilts) and elevated above the surrounding terrain — each one oriented according to sun exposure and panorama. Large glass bow windows are piled with upholstered orange and blue daybeds. Views range from the palm oasis and village rooftops of Nefta to the Chott El Jerid salt lake and the desert horizon. The raised position means more privacy, more breeze, and more of that unsettling feeling that you've woken up inside a designer art installation.

Troglodyte Rooms
Family Room / Suite

Troglodyte Rooms

Inspired by the cave dwellings of Matmata — a Berber village about an hour away — these rooms are partially underground and feel organically carved out of the earth. Constructed from small local clay bricks, they are built around circular spaces that link rooms together while maintaining privacy via private terraces. Sleep configuration is one large bed plus two singles, making them the natural pick for families. During the hot months (when the hotel is open), the underground structure keeps the interior naturally cooler than the exposed Piloti units.
