De Koepoort
Monumental historic meets thoughtfully modern. Stone archway exterior, contemporary interiors with quality finishes. Quiet, residential-feeling location on the park edge — no lobby, no concierge, no hotel bustle.
Check-in happens at B&B 't Poorthuys at Koepoortstraat 10 — not at the gate itself. Arrive between 3PM and 8PM.
Why It Matters
One of only a handful of places in the Netherlands where you can actually stay overnight inside a protected city gate monument. Listed on both Michelin Guide and Tablet Hotels. The building served as an artist's studio until 2016 before conversion — the intimate scale and two-apartment-only format make it genuinely private.
De Koepoort is literally a city gate — the last one standing of Middelburg's original eight. Built in 1739 by city architect Jan de Munck, carefully restored in 1992–1993, and converted into two self-catering apartments in 2019. You sleep inside a functioning historical monument, not a hotel room dressed up to look like one. It sits right on the Molenwaterpark with views over the old city ramparts, and the center of Middelburg is a 5-to-10-minute walk.

How you'll actually spend your days.
Bicycle rental available at B&B 't Poorthuys for €10/day. Villages like Veere, Domburg, Zoutelande, and Oostkapelle are all reachable by bike. Zeeland's flat terrain makes it ideal cycling country.
The old city walls and Molenwaterpark are right outside the apartment door. A walk along the bolwerk takes you through Middelburg's green outer ring — pleasant any time of year.
