Dearborn Inn
Americana heritage, Georgian Revival, design-forward restoration. Feels like a grand estate hotel — old-money atmosphere but with thoughtful contemporary touches. The lobby is museum-worthy without being stuffy.
Ask for a room facing Greenfield Village — some guests have caught fireworks displays from their windows.
Why It Matters
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1982, it was conceived by Henry Ford, designed by Albert Kahn, and counts Walt Disney, Eleanor Roosevelt, Orville Wright, and Ronald Reagan among its historic guests. The 2025 restoration preserved original Ford-era design elements while introducing five Colonial Replica Homes — standalone structures modeled after the residences of Edgar Allan Poe, Walt Whitman, Barbara Fritchie, Patrick Henry, and Oliver Wolcott. First airport hotel in the US (1931), first hotel with air conditioning (1937), first in Michigan with direct-dial guest telephones (1961).
Henry Ford had this Georgian-style hotel built in 1931 on 23 landscaped acres in Dearborn, designed by Albert Kahn, the so-called 'architect of Detroit.' It was conceived to serve travelers flying into Ford's private airport next door, making it one of the first airport hotels in America. After a two-year closure and a meticulous restoration — led by Ford Land's design teams alongside firms AvroKO, Dash Design, and Kraemer Design Group — it reopened in March 2025 as part of Marriott's Autograph Collection. The bones of the original are all there: checkerboard Italian marble flooring Ford selected himself, a green marble fireplace in the lobby, an antique clock. Guestrooms now feature four-poster walnut beds, Eames seating, and Ford-blue tiled bathrooms with archival artwork. It's a proper history lesson you can sleep in.
