Desert Rock Resort
Raw, dramatic luxury. The architecture — designed by Miami-based Oppenheim Architecture with interiors by Studio Paolo Ferrari — follows a build-with-the-land philosophy, using stone and sand from the excavation site itself. Custom torchlight-inspired lighting, natural desert tones, and the mountain canyon doing all the heavy lifting. No beach, no conventional hotel lobby. Just carved rock, pools that appear to hang in midair, and deep silence.
Book The Observatory in advance — it's only open on Sundays and Thursdays, reservation required, and accessible via a 120m suspension bridge over the Massif
Why It Matters
One of the most architecturally distinctive hotels to open anywhere in 2024. Built into actual rock formations rather than placed alongside them, it earned Two Michelin Keys almost immediately. Chef Osman Sezener — a Michelin-starred restaurateur from Turkey — leads all six dining venues. It is part of Red Sea Global's flagship Red Sea destination, Saudi Arabia's most ambitious tourism project.
Desert Rock is literally carved into the Hejaz Mountains above Saudi Arabia's Red Sea coast — villas and suites built directly into cliff faces, perched on rock pinnacles, or hollowed out of ancient stone. Every unit has a private pool and a dedicated villa host. Opened in late 2024 and immediately awarded Two Michelin Keys, it spans 30,000 square meters of raw terrain with six dining venues and a full spa built into the rock itself. Rates start at SAR 8,500 per night (roughly USD $2,260), and the top-tier Royal Villa stretches across 1,107 square meters.
