Why It Matters
One of Detroit's most decorated hotels. Named one of the 100 best new hotels in the world by Condé Nast Traveler in 2018, listed on Time Magazine's World's Greatest Places 2018, and ranked third best hotel in the Midwest by Condé Nast Traveler readers in 2023. The conversion of an 80-year-old firehouse — brass poles and all — into a functioning luxury hotel is genuinely impressive.
Detroit Foundation Hotel occupies a 1929 five-story neoclassical limestone-and-brick building that was the city's Fire Department headquarters for over 80 years. After a $30M+ renovation, it reopened in May 2017 as a 100-room boutique hotel with original terrazzo floors, glazed tile walls, red tile floors, and five original brass poles still in place. The Apparatus Room restaurant — set in the former truck bays — is arguably the main draw, and has been named restaurant of the year multiple times.

Commissioner's Suite
The hotel's largest and most celebrated room at 967 sq ft — formerly the actual office of Detroit's Fire Commissioner. It has its own pool table, card table, wet bar, and a spacious seating area. Flat-screen TV, locally curated private bar, individual climate control, Detroit-inspired literature, and custom local artwork. Perfect for honeymoons, anniversaries, or anyone who wants to genuinely spread out.

At 590 sq ft, this is the entry point into suite territory. A king bed plus sleeper sofa means it works for up to 4 guests. Real living space to spread out after a day in the city.
