Dimora delle Balze
Rustic-luxe Sicilian countryside. Old stone walls and vaulted ceilings meet custom contemporary furniture and Moroccan handmade cement tile floors. Each of the 11 rooms is named for a celebrated Sicilian artist, from Antonello da Messina to Luigi Pirandello. The vibe is refined but earthy — this is a working organic farm first, boutique hotel second.
May and June are the sweet spot: weather is mild, Sicilian art festivals are on in Syracuse, and the estate is less crowded than peak August
Why It Matters
One of the most thoughtfully restored masserias in Sicily. The Passo Ladro organic farm supplies the kitchen directly, the restaurant (Lumìa) operates under Chef Gabriele Camiolo, and the 6.3 Senses Spa uses Sisley products. It also runs a serious cultural program — art exhibitions, photo projects, stargazing dinners — rather than the usual check-the-boxes wellness fluff.
A 19th-century masseria built in 1886 by the noble Don Salvatore Zocco, now a 11-room boutique hotel set across 27 hectares of certified organic farmland on the Iblean plateau between Noto and Palazzolo Acreide. The Lops family began the restoration in 2009, working with designers Stefano Guidotti and Draga Obradovic to strip back the layers and reveal the estate's original frescoed ceilings, Byzantine columns, and crenellated walls — then pair them with bold contemporary design.
