Why It Matters
Oldest Breton Relais & Châteaux member (listed since 1964). Pioneer of the French hotel spa concept. Every room has a direct sea view and most are in genuinely historic buildings — manors transported stone by stone from elsewhere and reassembled on this peninsula.
Domaine de Rochevilaine is a collection of centuries-old granite buildings spread across a one-hectare rocky peninsula jutting into the Bay of Biscay in southern Brittany. It really does feel like a tiny hamlet: a 13th-century porch, a 15th-century manor, a 16th-century Renaissance house, a fisherman's cottage, and a granite castle all coexist on the same sea-battered headland. Thirty-four rooms, every single one with an ocean view. The Aqua Phénicia Marine Spa (1,300 sqm) was the first hotel spa in France when it opened in 1997, and the gastronomic restaurant by chef Maxime Nouail is recommended across all the major food guides.

Manoir des Cardinaux
A remarkable 15th-century building named after the famous Battle of the Cardinals (1759), perched on a rocky spur. Over 100 sqm spread across three main rooms: four bay windows looking out to sea, a spacious living area, dining room and south-facing terrace; a cosy bedroom with terrace for watching the sunrise; and an ocean-view bathroom where you can open the window and breathe in the Atlantic air from either the whirlpool bath or the sofa.

The one-hectare rocky peninsula includes garden areas and 300 metres of private coastal frontage. The property's lookout post from the 13th-century abbey is still standing. The coastline around Pen Lan is accessible on foot.
