Dorado Beach
Low-key ultra-luxury with serious eco credentials. The design nods to the property's plantation history while feeling contemporary and tropical. Not flashy — deliberately understated, which is exactly the point.
West-facing rooms are closest to the best swimmable beach and more desirable for sunset views — worth the premium
Why It Matters
One of only a handful of Ritz-Carlton Reserve properties globally, and the only one in the Caribbean. The first and only Caribbean resort to win the Forbes 5-Star Hotel AND Spa award simultaneously (2017). The 11-mile Rockefeller Nature Trail, a 5-acre spa with treehouse treatment rooms, a 690-bottle wine cellar (La Cava), and an immersive naturalist program for all ages make this genuinely different from a standard luxury beach resort.
Built on 50 acres of the former Laurance S. Rockefeller estate on Puerto Rico's north shore, this is one of only a handful of Ritz-Carlton Reserve properties in the world. 'Reserve' is the brand's top tier — the analogy is to winemaking, meaning these are the most extravagant hotels in the Ritz-Carlton collection. Rockefeller opened it in the 1950s with a rule that no building should stand taller than a palm tree, and that ethos still shapes the low-slung, beachfront layout today. Every suite faces the ocean. Every guest gets a dedicated Embajador (personal host). The spa alone covers five acres.
