The hotel's whisky credentials are the real draw. The Still bar holds over 750 bottles including bottles from nearly every Speyside distillery, rare Islays, Lowlands, and international expressions — with a 40-year-old Macallan and a 1979 Imperial among the standouts. The Dowans Hotel is a family-run boutique hotel in a grand 1888 Victorian mansion perched above the village of Aberlour, with views over the River Spey and the valley beyond. It sits dead centre on Scotland's Malt Whisky Trail, with over 50 distilleries within easy reach — some walkable. The Still bar stocks 750+ whiskies including a rare 40-year-old Macallan, and Restaurant 57 sources its venison, fish, and lobster from within a 30-minute drive. The 'Mountain of Moray' at 2,775 feet, with views across the Moray Firth to the Black Isle. A bracing half-day outing for confident walkers. Kestrels and buzzards are common sightings near the summit.
Private estates like Knockando and Rothes run game and clay pigeon shoots, keeping up a tradition dating back to the Victorian era.
Golf courses at Dufftown and Rothes are nearby. The championship course at Castle Stuart is about an hour's drive away. Ballindalloch Castle Golf Course is 12 minutes by car.
Over 20 miles of mountain-bike trails through mature Scots pine and birch woodland at Ben Aigen, accessible via a diversion from the Speyside Way.
The Spey is one of Scotland's finest salmon rivers. Private estates including Knockando and Rothes offer fishing berths. Local records claim a 48.5 lb salmon was once landed at Aberlour — take that as you will.
More than 50 distilleries within reach, many offering guided tours, tastings, and visitor centres. Aberlour Distillery is 8 minutes on foot. Glenfiddich, The Macallan, Balvenie, Glenfarclas, Tamdhu, and many others are all within easy driving distance. Hotel staff — particularly Lauren — can advise on routes and recommendations.
The famous long-distance walking route runs along the old North of Scotland Railway Line, skirting the River Spey. Access is a short walk from the hotel gardens. Wildlife en route includes red squirrels, pine martins, red deer, otters, herons, and Atlantic salmon. Easy, flat going along the valley floor.
The hotel plays a regular part in this annual global whisky event, typically held in May. The hotel's own staff have won the Spirit of Speyside Ambassador Award. Book well ahead — it fills up fast.
