Drift Santa Barbara sits inside a repurposed 1920s Spanish building on State Street, right in the thick of downtown. The exterior plays by the rules — classic whitewashed Spanish facade, utterly in keeping with the neighborhood — but step inside and the whole thing shifts. Black-painted walls, headboards cut from repurposed California redwood, concrete accents, brass hardware, and woven rattan lighting create a warm-but-moody Baja minimalism that has no interest in being a typical beach hotel. It's a 45-room boutique that earns its design cred without feeling try-hard about it.
