El Capitan Hotel
Contemporary retro boutique — think Central Valley agricultural heritage meets polished urban cool. Natural textures, earthy tones, and curated local art give every room a distinct sense of place. Social and lively at street level thanks to multiple bars and dining venues.
Book Rainbird separately on OpenTable — it fills up, especially on weekends, and non-guests dine there too
Why It Matters
Winner of the 2024 Condé Nast Traveler's Reader's Choice Award and featured in the Michelin Guide, El Capitan is the standout lodging option in California's Central Valley. It fills a real gap: a genuinely design-forward, food-focused boutique hotel at the Yosemite jumping-off point, where everything else is chain motels.
El Capitan opened in March 2021 in a historic downtown Merced building — the last real city before Yosemite's gates, some 80 miles to the east. The interior is contemporary but rooted in the Central Valley: custom illustrated wallpaper, in-room record players, vintage-style phones, and local art on every floor. Four dining options run from an all-day café to Rainbird, a farm-sourced restaurant with a 2024 Wine Spectator Award of Excellence. The Mainzer Theatre next door adds movies, live music, and a full bar. No pool, but downtown Merced is very walkable and the Yosemite gateway is a straight shot east on Highway 140.

How you'll actually spend your days.
The hotel is right in the middle of Merced's downtown. The Merced County Courthouse Museum is a 5-minute walk. The entire compact downtown is accessible on foot.
Seasonal outdoor courtyard with cocktails, local dishes, and special events. Open Tuesday–Saturday evenings from 5pm–9pm.
Classic and contemporary films, live music acts, and game-room access at the Mainzer next door. A full bar and restaurant are part of the deal. El Capitan guests get complimentary valet parking for the visit.
The hotel's historic lobby, courtyard, Drawing Room, Native Son, and Mainzer are available for photography and videography sessions by request. All sessions require a pre-approved form.
El Capitan sits 80 miles west of Yosemite Valley — roughly a 90-minute drive. The YARTS bus to Yosemite departs from the Merced Transportation Center for car-free access.
