Le Montreux Palace
Belle Époque grandeur meets Swiss Riviera refinement. Meticulously preserved historic palace with genuine old-world opulence — gilded ballrooms, marble staircases, terraced gardens down to the lake. Recent renovations have freshened many rooms while keeping the bones intact.
Spend the extra for a lake-view room; city-view rooms at this price point can disappoint.
Why It Matters
Built in 1906 by architect Eugène Jost in just 18 months, the hotel is listed as a cultural property of national importance in Switzerland. It hosted the signing of the Montreux Convention in 1936, was Richard Strauss' exile refuge (he composed his Four Last Songs here), and has been home to Vladimir Nabokov, Quincy Jones, and Freddie Mercury among many others. The largest 5-star property on the Swiss Riviera.
Opened in 1906, the Fairmont Le Montreux Palace is Montreux's biggest and most historic hotel — a sprawling Belle Époque façade that dominates the lakeside promenade, staring straight across at the Alps. Inside, the grandeur holds: chandeliers, marble, richly decorated ballrooms. But the rooms range considerably, so book accordingly. The lake-view rooms and suites justify the price; the entry-level city-view rooms, less so. Vladimir Nabokov lived here for the last 17 years of his life. Quincy Jones has a suite named after him. The Montreux Convention was signed here in 1936. And every July, the hotel becomes the heartbeat of the Montreux Jazz Festival.
