The Queen Elizabeth
Contemporary luxury with genuine historical weight. The post-renovation bones are clean and modern — think patterned feature walls, built-in USB ports everywhere, Chromecast in rooms. But the DNA is very much a grand urban hotel that's part of the city fabric, not insulated from it. The Nacarat bar draws locals in on weeknights. The Marché Artisans concept is Montreal-forward. And you can still sleep in the room where Lennon wrote the most famous peace anthem of the 20th century.

Why It Matters
One of the most historically significant hotel rooms in North America sits on the 17th floor — Suite 1742, where the John Lennon and Yoko Ono Bed-In for Peace happened in 1969. The suite was reimagined with VR headsets, archival memorabilia, and the lyrics to 'Give Peace a Chance' etched into the walls. That alone makes this place worth knowing. The broader hotel also has a serious claim to being the city's premier convention and events address, with direct underground access to Central Station and the Montreal metro network.
Opened in 1958 as a 21-story convention hotel built directly above Montreal's Central Station, the Queen Elizabeth has the kind of résumé most hotels can only dream about. Queen Elizabeth II dined here in 1959. John Lennon and Yoko Ono staged their Bed-In for Peace in Suite 1742 in 1969, recording 'Give Peace a Chance' from that bed. It served as headquarters for the 1976 Montreal Olympics. Then in 2016, owner Ivanhoé Cambridge shut the whole thing down for a year and spent over $140 million turning it into a sharp, contemporary Fairmont property designed by Sid Lee Architecture — cutting the room count from over 1,000 to 950, adding proper suites, and reconnecting the hotel's ground floor to the life of the city around it.
