Fort Road Hotel
Art-forward seaside boutique. Urbane and considered without being stuffy. The kind of place where no detail goes unexamined — custom dark oak radiator handles, books curated by The Margate Bookshop, fresh milk in the mini-fridge. No TVs in most rooms, by design.
Room 9 is the open secret — it has a bay window seat that looks towards the Turner Contemporary and harbour arm one way, and towards rockpools and an Antony Gormley sculpture the other way.
Why It Matters
Owned by art-world insiders and listed in the MICHELIN Guide via Tablet Hotels, it's the only hotel in Margate with serious design credentials, a curated contemporary art collection (including Tracey Emin), and a ground-floor restaurant and basement bar that pull in non-guests. CN Traveller called it 'instantly the most grown-up hotel in Margate.'
Fort Road Hotel is an 18th-century building turned 14-room art hotel, directly opposite the Turner Contemporary gallery and a short walk from Margate beach. Bought in 2018 by local creative entrepreneurs and reopened after a full renovation in 2022, it is the most design-serious hotel in Margate by a clear margin. Think Naturalmat beds, Kvadrat linen curtains, herringbone marble floors, Haeckels toiletries, and walls hung with works by Tracey Emin and others — all in a town that has become one of Britain's most interesting places.
