A 17th-century fortress perched on one of the most westerly points in mainland Europe, jutting into the Atlantic at the edge of the Parque Natural de Sintra-Cascais. Two cannons flank the entrance. Inside: stone staircases, terracotta floors, vaulted brick ceilings, velvet sofas, and wrought-iron chandeliers. The 27-room Relais & Châteaux property has held a Michelin star for its restaurant since 2001, and the waves crashing against the rocks at the base of the building are audible from most rooms.

Direct access to Praia do Guincho and Praia da Crismina — two sandy beaches flanking the hotel. Both are part of the protected Sintra-Cascais Natural Park. Beach towels provided. Note: strong waves and cold water make swimming challenging; these beaches are better for walks and sunbathing.
Standard and electric bikes available to guests at no charge. The coastal cycling path from the hotel to Cascais town center is one of the region's best rides — flat, scenic, and about 7 km. The path passes dunes, cliffs, and a string of beach coves.
Multiple trails begin at the hotel — across sand dunes, along cliff paths, and on wooden boardwalks through the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park. Request a trail map from reception. The walk to the Cabo Raso lighthouse is a popular short option.
Horseback riding is available in the surrounding area of the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park. Arrange through the hotel concierge.

Praia do Guincho — directly in front of the hotel — is one of Europe's premier windsurfing and surfing beaches. The hotel can arrange surf lessons. Note: the water is cold and the waves are powerful; this is not a calm swimming beach.
