Four Columns Inn & Restaurant
Classic New England country inn with a celebrity wink — rooms named after famous guests, gas fireplaces, soaking tubs, and a cozy pub that doubles as the only real dinner spot in the village. Romantic and unplugged, not luxury-hotel polished.
The Mick Jagger Suite (Suite #1, 544 sq ft) is the largest room and has a spectacular multi-head shower — well worth the upgrade if available
Why It Matters
One of Vermont's most storied inns, widely cited as an early American farm-to-table pioneer when it opened in 1965. The 1832 Greek Revival building is one of the finest examples of temple-front architecture in Vermont. Named for four iconic Ionic columns that tie the building architecturally to the historic Windham County Courthouse across the green.
A Greek Revival landmark built in 1832, Four Columns Inn sits on Newfane's village green directly across from the Windham County Courthouse. The four monumental Ionic columns on the facade deliberately echo those of the courthouse next door — a detail most guests miss until someone points it out. The inn opened in 1965, went through multiple ownership changes (including a closure period), and is now back in operation with 15 celebrity-named rooms and the on-site 1832 Tavern & Pub. It has a guest history that reads like a backstage pass: Mick Jagger, Sting, Nicole Kidman, Michael Douglas, and Chris Rock have all stayed here, and economist John Kenneth Galbraith shared the dining room with Henry Kissinger in the 1970s.
