Fowlescombe Farm
Grounded luxury meets working farm. The vibe is slow, intentional, and genuinely immersive — guests are encouraged to collect eggs, bake bread with the chefs, or just sit by the pond with nothing to do. Design is warm and textural rather than showy: sheepskin, English oak, handcrafted details, antiques. Not a hotel that performs rurality; it actually is rural.
Ask to join the vegetable garden harvest with head gardener Shelley — it directly shapes dinner that evening
Why It Matters
Named in National Geographic Traveller's '30 Best Hotels in the World' 2025 and featured in Condé Nast Traveller and The Times. The Refectory holds a Michelin Guide listing. The farm has been organic for over 20 years and is home to the UK's largest flock of rare Manx Loaghtan sheep — the same wool used in the handcrafted mattresses in every suite. All stays are full board, all activities included.
Fowlescombe Farm is a full-board rural retreat of just ten suites set within a working 450-acre regenerative farm on the edge of Dartmoor. Stone barns and a Victorian farmhouse have been converted by creative director Paul Glade and Swiss architects Studio Gugger into quietly luxurious spaces — local limestone, oak, and wool everywhere, zero country-house kitsch. The Refectory kitchen is the beating heart of it all, with a Michelin-listed, daily-changing menu dictated entirely by what the gardens and fields are producing that morning.

On arrival, guests meet with staff in the Map Room for drinks while finalising their personalised itinerary for the stay. Staff will recommend hidden walking trails, local experts, or simply give guests a lift to a favourite pub.
Hands-on bread baking sessions in the Refectory kitchen, producing loaves that go on the dinner table that evening. A guest favourite. Included in all stays.
Guests handpick botanicals from the kitchen gardens and Greenhouse for an evening gin-making session. Included in all stays.
Organic wine tasting sessions, often paired with the Fowlescombe charcuterie from the farm's on-site Curing Barn. Included in all stays.
Guided coastal foraging experience at Salcombe on the South Devon coast. Arranged at additional cost.

Two marked footpaths on the property — one yellow, one pink — weaving through woodland, over fields, and past streams. Timber bridges cross the valley streams. Ideal for early-morning runs or late-afternoon strolls before dinner.

A kayaking experience up the estuary from East Portlemouth on the tide, arriving at the Millbrook Inn (Fowlescombe's sister pub in Southpool) for lunch or drinks, then gliding back. Additional charge applies.
Guests join head gardener Shelley Hutcheon to harvest from the extensive kitchen gardens. What gets picked directly shapes the day's menu. Included in all stays.
Staff arrange wild swimming sessions at nearby secluded coves — including early morning trips with flasks of hot chocolate. Complimentary with stays.
Guided yoga sessions held inside the Greenhouse (or outdoors on the lawn when the weather cooperates). Scheduled on Saturday mornings, Thursdays, and Sunday evenings. Included in all stays.
