Hakone
Contemporary Japanese resort. Sleek and design-forward, not traditionally ornate. The aesthetic plays on Gora's rocky, hard-shelled terrain — the name literally means 'hard shell' in Japanese. Quiet, intimate, and decidedly couples-oriented, though families and solo travelers are welcome.
The shuttle from Gora Station only runs 16:00–19:00 for arrivals — book it when you reserve, or plan to arrive by bus or taxi if you're getting there early
Why It Matters
Listed in the Michelin Guide and featured on Tablet Hotels. One of the flagship properties of the FUFU brand, Japan's growing chain of modern-luxury ryokans. Every single one of the 39 rooms is a different design, and every one has its own private hot spring fed by natural mineral water. The communal milky-white bath on the 5th floor overlooks the full sweep of the Hakone mountain range.
FUFU Hakone is a 39-room all-suite mountain resort in Gora, Hakone's rocky upper reaches, about 90 minutes from Tokyo by train. Every room comes with its own private rotenburo (open-air hot spring bath), and the design throughout leans into the volcanic landscape: rough-hewn rock walls, bamboo vases, seasonal flowers, and muted forest tones. Think modern hotel comfort wrapped in ryokan ritual — kaiseki dinners, organic amenities, omotenashi service — without any tatami floors or communal bathing obligations.
