Nikko
Contemporary ryokan meets Meiji imperial nostalgia. Minimalist exterior, richly layered interiors with antique touches, botanical motifs, and natural materials. Quiet, intimate, and intentionally unhurried.
Rooms on upper floors are more private; guests on the ground-floor Stylish Suite still report total satisfaction but upstairs has better seclusion
Why It Matters
Michelin 2 Keys recognition in 2024. One of the FUFU Japan brand's flagship properties, sitting in the shadow of UNESCO World Heritage shrines with private-source hot spring baths in every suite. The food — kaiseki or teppanyaki, chef's choice depending on the evening — is consistently described as a Michelin-level experience in its own right.
FUFU Nikko is a 24-room all-suite luxury ryokan right next to Tamozawa Imperial Villa Memorial Park, a former imperial retreat now open to the public. Every room comes with a private hot spring bath fed from the resort's own natural source. The design channels Meiji-era imperial aesthetics — velvet, silk, brass, warm wood paneling, and local Oya stone — but the rooms themselves are modern and fully loaded. It earned Michelin 2 Keys in 2024.

An in-room kit to make Japanese ume (plum) syrup. Choose from Fully Ripened Nanko Ume (fruity) or Ōshuku (refreshing). The syrup matures over about a week at home — good as a cocktail base, with soda or tea. A nice take-home project with real craft behind it.
Copy the 276 characters of the Heart Sutra — or the shorter 59-character Hongakusan — using a fountain brush pen in your room. The completed sutra is donated to Rinno-ji Temple on your behalf. The brush pen is yours to keep. Available any day, same-day booking accepted.
Private in-room (or in-restaurant) experience making traditional Buddhist prayer beads using natural stones of your choice. Takes 1–2 hours. Guests from outside Japan can take their Juzu home the same day; Japanese residents can opt to have theirs blessed at Chuzenji Temple and mailed later. Same-day booking subject to availability.
Concierge-arranged private access to the shogun's sitting room at Nikko Toshogu Shrine — a section not available on standard public tours. Must be arranged through the hotel concierge.
Guided cycling tour through downtown Nikko and the UNESCO World Heritage shrine complex. Departs from FUFU Nikko; transfer back to hotel or station at the end. Available late March through end of November (some restrictions July–September due to heat). Requires 7 days' advance booking. Japanese-speaking guide only.
Sit zazen meditation inside the precincts of Rinno-ji, a World Heritage Site, guided by a monk. Available in English and Japanese. Sessions run 50 minutes. Not available on certain days in January and February, or during scheduled temple events.
Full private guided experience combining forest trekking along the shore of Lake Chuzenji (Japan's highest-altitude natural lake) with packrafting — lightweight, portable raft — on the lake itself. Includes a light meal (yuba rice ball, yokan, drink) and transportation. English-speaking guide available. Available April to mid-July and September to November.
Wet suit canyoning down a mountain stream near Urami Falls, including natural waterslides and swimming pools formed by the river. Private tour with hotel pickup. For ages 13 and up. Runs early May through end of September.
