Founded in 1864, the Galle Face Hotel is one of the oldest hotels east of the Suez — a grand colonial landmark planted right on Colombo's seafront, facing the famous Galle Face Green. It has hosted royalty, heads of state, and literary giants (Arthur C. Clarke and Noel Coward both stayed here), and the atmosphere of all that accumulated history is the main reason to book. Think high ceilings, wooden floors, long verandas overlooking the Indian Ocean, and a museum with Prince Philip's first car. But look — the rooms in the standard categories are small, the wooden floors carry sound, and events in the ballroom or at Firebeach can bleed noise into the heritage wing at night.
