Gamagori Classic Hotel
Pre-war Japanese castle meets Art Deco — formal, nostalgic, and quietly grand. Think pressed white linen, retro elevator buttons, and a fireplace in the lobby. Not flashy, not modern. The kind of place that rewards guests who appreciate what 90-year-old architecture actually feels like.

Why It Matters
Japan's first designated international tourist hotel (1934). One of nine members of the Japan Classic Hotels Association. The main building and three annex structures are all registered national Tangible Cultural Properties. Babe Ruth and the 1934 MLB All-Star tour used it as their Nagoya/Shizuoka exhibition base. Emperor Showa and Empress Kojun stayed here in 1957. The THE COVE annex — a 1916 wooden structure converted into a luxury suite in 2024 — now has a natural hot spring with views of Takeshima Island.
Built in 1934 on a 40-metre hill above Mikawa Bay, Gamagori Classic Hotel is Japan's first government-designated international tourist hotel — a distinction that brought Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and the entire American Major League All-Stars squad through its doors within months of opening. The castle-like exterior with sweeping eaves and decorative gables blends traditional Japanese temple architecture with an Art Deco interior that's been preserved almost exactly as it was in the 1930s. A Grand Renewal renovation completed in 2026 refreshed all guest rooms and the entrance lobby while keeping the original design bones — the flower-themed elevator dial, chandelier, marble windowsills, and bronze detailing — firmly intact.

The hotel's 3.4-hectare grounds host roughly 3,000 azalea bushes across five varieties — including Rhododendron pulchrum — that bloom in pink and red from mid to late April. Open to the public with a ¥500 admission. One of the region's most popular spring events.
Guests can tour the interior of the main building — itself a registered national Tangible Cultural Property — including the Art Deco lobby, original chandelier, flower-motif elevator dial, and marble details. Particularly recommended for those staying at THE COVE (check-in is at the main building). Ask at reception for the self-guided overview.
Hands-on pottery making at the Akahiko Kiln in Kaminogocho, Gamagori city — home of third-generation ceramicist Takao Kato, who works in the Shigaraki ware tradition. Session includes tea ceremony explanation and matcha tea. Morning classes start 9–10am; afternoon 1–2pm. Booking by hotel inquiry.
Guided tour of Takeshima Island led by Gamagori volunteer tourist guides. The entire island is a national natural monument (designated 1930) home to 238 warm-climate plant species, five shrines, and the Benten enshrined at Yaotomi Shrine — one of Japan's Seven Benten. The tour crosses the iconic 387-metre bridge (the only bridge in Japan to pass through a torii gate). Morning session: 9:10–10:10. Daytime session: 13:30–14:30. Approximately 1 hour.
Walk across the 387-metre bridge directly from the hotel vicinity to Takeshima Island. The bridge passes through a torii gate — unique in Japan. The island has a walking trail and five shrines. Best visited in the morning or before sunset.
