S Loft Atrium rooms overlook the dramatic industrial lobby hall through large interior windows — a genuinely unusual experience

Why It Matters

Hamburg's first design hotel and one of Germany's most notable adaptive reuse projects. The building dates from 1892-1895 and is listed on Hamburg's monument protection register. The 600-sqm lobby atrium — five stories tall — is the architectural centrepiece. Every room is different by design. The hotel has been operating since January 2000 and belongs to the global Design Hotels collection.

The Gastwerk is a converted 1892 gasworks — Hamburg's first design hotel, opened in January 2000. The name is a bilingual pun: 'Gastwerk' fuses the building's original function (gaswerk) with the German word for guest (Gast). The 600-sqm, five-storey brick atrium that once stored 5,000 tons of coal now serves as the lobby, all raw industrial bones and deliberate warmth. 141 rooms across seven loft categories, a serious cocktail bar, a restaurant doing seasonal European cooking, and a spa run by an outside operator. It sits in Altona/Bahrenfeld — not in the thick of central Hamburg, but the neighborhood has its own pull.

Where You'll Stay

7 room types available

L Loft

L Loft

30sqm with high ceilings, large windows, and the exposed brick that defines the original building. Individual floor plans mean no two rooms are the same. Feels like a chic city apartment rather than a hotel room. Partly with a desk.

M Loft

30sqm rooms on the ground floor of the hotel's extension wing. Modern and functional — exposed concrete, large windows, textiles and wooden furniture. The Cosy Spa is in the same wing, making these the most convenient rooms for wellness guests.

S Loft
Standard

S Loft

The entry-level loft, but don't underestimate it. Historic brickwork sets the tone and each room has its own character. Homelike factory ambience with Nespresso, individual design, and Gastwerk's characteristically generous feel-good atmosphere. Ranges from 20-25sqm.

S Loft Atrium
Standard

S Loft Atrium

Same footprint as the S Loft (25-30sqm) but with a big difference: windows facing the five-storey industrial lobby atrium below. You get the hotel's dramatic architecture as your view, plus the hum of guests coming and going. Good if you want theatre; not ideal if you want silence.

XL Loft

40sqm with a walk-in closet — the step up in space is noticeable. Warm colours, king-size bed with premium down quilts, and individual lighting all add up to a room you genuinely don't want to leave. The exposed brick wall is particularly prominent here.
