Gidleigh Park
Classic English country house with serious culinary credentials. The vibe is relaxed but refined — no stiff formality, but staff know your name and your wine preferences before you've asked. Think fireside armchairs, antique furnishings, muddy boots in the boot room after a moor walk, then a seven-course tasting menu that evening.
The Dartmeet Spa Suite is the one room with its own private steam room and sauna — worth the upgrade if you want spa-level luxury without a dedicated spa facility
Why It Matters
One of England's most storied country house hotels, holding a Michelin star since 1981 (under various chefs). The kitchen garden feeds the restaurant, the wine cellar runs to 13,000 bottles and 1,300 bins, and the Dartmoor setting is genuinely remote. Past culinary alumni include Michael Caines (20+ years, two Michelin stars) and Chris Eden. Current Executive Chef is Ian Webber.
A 1920s Tudor-style country house on the edge of Dartmoor National Park, sitting in 107 acres of woodland, river and gardens. The exterior is mock-Tudor, the interior Arts and Crafts — all antique furniture, fine artwork and Brownsword-collection pieces — and the two have been blended so seamlessly it is genuinely hard to tell which parts are original. Twenty-four individually designed bedrooms, a Michelin-starred restaurant, and some of the wildest moorland in southern England right outside the door.
